Destined for a career in law, but on a visit to Deventer, he met Johann Friederich Gronovius, and under his influence abandoned law for philology, and went on to study under Daniel Heinsius at Leiden. In 1656, at the request of the Elector of Brandeburg, he took the chair of rhetoric in the University of Duisberg, but two years later, on the recommendation of Gronovius, he succeeded him at Deventer, and in 1662 he moved to the University of Utrecht. He enjoyed fame amongst the Courts of Europe, being visited by Lorenzo Magalotti, was specially recognized by Louis XIV and became a particular favourite of William III of England, who made him Historiographer Royal. His editions of the classics marked a significant advance in scholarship.
